Overview

ABU CHAPATI is a cherished Indian Muslim eatery nestled in the heart of George Town, Penang, at 43 Queen Street. This unassuming spot has been delighting locals and visitors for nearly five decades, earning a reputation for its authentic flavors and warm atmosphere. The restaurant specializes in chapati paired with rich, slow-cooked curries such as lamb and chicken, creating a classic yet memorable dining experience.

What stands out most at ABU CHAPATI is the chapati itself — soft, fluffy, and seasoned just right, making it nearly impossible to stop at one. Accompanying the chapati are beautifully spiced curries, including tender lamb and vibrant chicken, which are full of depth without overwhelming heat. These dishes transport diners straight to the streets of India, offering a comforting and genuine taste of Indian Muslim cuisine.

The space, recently upgraded to include more comfortable seating arrangements, strikes a balance between simplicity and warmth. Although the place retains its humble stall charm, the added tables and chairs invite guests to settle in and savor their meals. The staff’s friendliness enhances the experience, making visitors feel welcomed and cared for. For those who prefer a quick bite, takeaway remains a popular option, especially given the limited seating prior to the upgrade.

ABU CHAPATI’s appeal extends beyond its food to its approachability and attention to detail. Facilities like a handwashing area with soap help maintain hygiene, reflecting thoughtful service. The menu has evolved to include white rice alongside its signature chapati and offers a clear price list, making it easy to navigate. Moreover, complementary drinks like the ginger chai and teh tarik, available from late afternoon until evening, deepen the cultural ambiance.

Ideal for those seeking authentic Indian Muslim flavors in an informal setting, ABU CHAPATI is a hidden gem cherished by locals and appreciated by adventurous food lovers. It caters to anyone eager to explore time-honored recipes crafted with care, whether dining in or grabbing a quick takeaway. The combination of tradition, genuine hospitality, and flavorful dishes makes ABU CHAPATI a must-visit culinary destination in Penang.

This small stall make delicious Chapati. I was told it was almost 50 year old shop. They serve a few special menu like goat brain curry. Sitting chairs is limited I just take way, love the teh tarik open at 4pm until 10pm. For my second visit I try the chicken curry and dhal curry it's was good highly recommend. For may latest visit they upgrade sitting and table for dine in. Much better and comfortable. They change the name to ABU CHAPATI. Few upgrades for the food stall they also serve white rice. They also provide list for the menu and price.

A hidden gem. Only locals were there so I got a bit shy about ordering but the young man manning the stand was so friendly and nice. Chapati and the chicken and mutton curries were all so delicious and so affordable. There’s a sink with soap at the front so you can wash your hands before and after. If you don’t want to eat with your hands, they have silverware at each table.

So delicious!! We walked by one night and decided to just try it for a small dinner. The chapati was WOW delicious as well as the chicken curry and veggie curry. We came back next day and bought more chapati! They are just delicious. A lot of locals eat here and we have yet to see any foreigners like us eating here. Definitely worth a try! If you want to eat like they do, use your hands but they provide utensils too! 4 chapatis, two small dishes of curry came out to just 11.80 RM for us!
